Did I forget to mention Memphis?
Tuesday, May 10 @ 21:56:21 PDT by Scott
Barbecue

On April 28th, scientists made the stunning announcement that the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, which had long been believed extinct, has recently been found in eastern Arkansas. A week later, I was on the road in search of the woodpecker. By happy coincidence, the bird is only about an hour away from Memphis and all its porcine wonders. On to the food...

Mexican on Maple (Part 4)

Mexican

La Paisanita and Victor’s Taqueria are across the street from each other at the intersection of Maple and Lucas. The last time I made a focused push through taquerias in this area (about two years ago), Victor’s had some of the better meats I’d found. How do they hold up now? On to the food...

In the last report, I had my first encounter with Hidalgo-style barbacoa. Less than a quarter mile up the road, near La Guadalupana Meat Market, Barbacoa al Estilo Hidalgo offers even more mutton. On to the food...

Mexican on Maple (Part 2)

Continuing the exploration along Maple Avenue, this report focuses on two adjacent restaurants near the Tollway underpass: Esquivel’s and El Rincon Tapatio #3. Each makes claims of regional influence from the central plains of Mexico. On to the food...

Mexican on Maple (Part 1)

Mexican

Maple Avenue stretches from the shadow of The Crescent to the foot of Love Field. Much of the road is dotted with Tex-Mex joints, taquerias, and tiendas. Though I’ve eaten at many of these spots over the years, my efforts have been anything but systematic or exhaustive. Convinced that there’s some undiscovered (by me, at least) greatness on that street, I’ve been working my way up its length, eating at every taco stand, sit-down restaurant, and elote cart along the way. This report starts in the 4000 block with Herrera’s Café and La Condesa. On to the food...

Cheap Chicken
Monday, April 11 @ 11:36:01 PDT by Scott
Miscellaneous

Time constraints have kept me from typing up a few reports I’ve been working on (including the ongoing “Quest for ‘Cue” and a systematic neighborhood Mexican crawl). So, with apologies, here’s a bit of filler: cheap chicken lunches at Pollo Campero, Bubba’s, and Pollo Fiesta. On to the food...

The New Nana
Monday, April 04 @ 07:53:16 PDT by Scott
Froufrou

Under the direction of Chef David McMillan, Nana was one of the best restaurants in Dallas for the past several years. (And with subdued lighting, tiered floors, skyline view, and art on loan from the Crow collection, it may still be the most attractive dining room in town.) The food, while sometimes conservative, was consistently good, as was the service. But with McMillan’s recent departure, the toque has passed to Anthony Bombaci, resulting in some interesting changes. On to the food...

Ribs, Rails, and Rabbit

Barbecue

For several years, Aaron Given, a PhD candidate at Southeast Missouri State University, has been studying the behavior of one of North America’s most secretive birds, the Yellow Rail. Recently, I had the opportunity to join Given for a bird-banding outing in the salt marshes of Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge on the Gulf Coast, south of Houston. On the way down, I refueled at the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church (in Huntsville) and Hugo’s (in Houston). On to the food...

Five Bucks
Tuesday, March 22 @ 07:04:36 PST by Scott
Miscellaneous

With a baby on the way, I’ve been forced to confront that other dreaded “b” word: Budget. The recently imposed austerity plan limits my daily lunch allowance to five dollars. In the past, when I pulled out of the parking garage at lunchtime, I searched my feelings while approaching the first traffic light, thinking, “What am I in the mood for?” But on Day One of the new budget, that question had me flummoxed. Everything I seemed to be in the mood for broke the budget. It’s taken a while to get into the right frame of mind. If the budget has a silver lining, it’s that I’m now being compelled to dig a little deeper into the restaurant scene. In time, I’m convinced this will yield dividends. This report includes “five buck” meals at Taj Mahal Imports, Arc-en-Ciel, and Lee’s Catfish. On to the food...

Trotter's, Exploitation, and Necessity
Wednesday, March 16 @ 08:09:00 PST by Scott
Froufrou

Late last year, I joined a couple of friends for dinner at the kitchen table at Charlie Trotter’s. One of those friends--Russell Arben Fox--recently posted on his blog some lengthy ruminations prompted by that meal. In this entry, I’ll be responding to some of Russell’s comments, which are really more social and economic than strictly food-related. On to the food theory...
