Hygiene Enthymemes (Will Tacos Really Kill Me?)
Wednesday, May 20 @ 20:33:49 PDT by Scott
Mexican

"You're going to that dump again? I hope you realize you're taking your life in your hands."

The "dump" my coworker referred to was a small north Dallas taqueria operated by a couple from Guanajuato. At the time (about ten years ago), it was the only place I knew of in town to get tacos al pastor prepared with the traditional, pineapple-topped vertical rotisserie. Its proximity to where I worked made it great for quick lunch breaks. Stepping out of the elevator, I went my way and my coworker went his. Then I hesitated. Did he know something I didn't? On to the ruminations...

Mexican on Jefferson: El Rincon de Zapata
Monday, April 20 @ 16:33:05 PDT by Scott
Mexican

Restaurant y Taqueria El Rincon de Zapata almost derailed the "Mexican on Jefferson" series of reports. Once I found it and realized just how damned good it was, I couldn't bring myself to continue the push westward. And knowing that even a slight uptick in business would probably change the restaurant for the worse, I hesitated to post about it. On to the food...

Mexican on Jefferson: Lito's Restaurant

Mexican

Lito's Restaurant, located almost directly across the street from Gonzalez Restaurant, is one of the newer entrants in the crowded field along Jefferson, opening last fall. It's a good one. On to the food...

Mexican on Jefferson: Gonzalez Restaurant
Monday, March 16 @ 09:01:06 PDT by Scott
Mexican

The Jefferson location of Gonzalez Restaurant has been around for a little over two decades. Though it has received occasional mention in the local press (including a brief review in the DMN in late 2007), the restaurant doesn't often turn up in online discussions of Tex-Mex. That's unfortunate, because Gonzalez Restaurant is above the Dallas average (such as it is). On to the food...

Oh, Atlanta! (Notes on 13 Brunswick Stews)

About a year ago, I had two days in Atlanta, a rental car, and a list of tips on where to find the best Brunswick stew. Here are some brief notes and photos from the trip. On to the food...

Mexican on Jefferson: Tortas Las Tortugas

While continuing to work on this series during the summer, I noticed a new torteria pop up. Though not actually on Jefferson, Tortas Las Tortugas is visible from Jefferson, which is good enough for me. On to the food...

Mexican on Jefferson: La Palapa Veracruzana
Sunday, November 23 @ 21:15:36 PST by Scott
Mexican

One afternoon in May, when meeting Theabroma for antojitos at La Hechizera, she pointed out a "coming soon" announcement in a storefront across the street. Months went by as the interior work continued. In mid-fall, La Palapa Veracruzana opened. On to the food...

Mexican on Jefferson: La Hechizera

La Hechizera (or Tortas La Hechizera) is a small, but growing, local chain. The Jefferson location opened within the past year, months after my westward itinerary down the boulevard passed the storefront that would eventually house the restaurant. On to the food...
