Upscale Vegetarian: The Mansion on Turtle Creek
Wednesday, September 19 @ 21:13:22 PDT by Scott
Vegetarian

Beyond its strong reputation for food, the restaurant at The Mansion on Turtle Creek is known for service--for getting every aspect of the dining experience right. If there's any restaurant in town that would avoid the common mistakes that vegetarians encounter, I thought The Mansion would be it. On to the food...

Upscale Vegetarian: Bijoux
Tuesday, September 11 @ 22:06:07 PDT by Scott
Vegetarian

Bijoux opened quietly last year under the direction of Scott Gottlich, who is perhaps best known for appreciating the pupusas at El Camaron, as revealed in a StarChefs interview earlier this year. (Well, perhaps he's better known for his stint at the helm of Lola, but his comment about the pupusas gives him street cred.) Despite lacking the flash of some restaurants that opened last year, Bijoux steadily collected accolades from the press. How well does Bijoux rise to the vegetarian challenge? On to the food...

Upscale Vegetarian: York Street
Wednesday, September 05 @ 20:35:53 PDT by Scott
Vegetarian

Sharon Hage is the most beloved chef in Dallas. Ask anyone--critics, foodies, her fellow culinary professionals--and you'll hear nothing but praise for her, as a person and as a chef. Her restaurant, York Street, is among the most respected in town. (It's also, ironically, the least emulated.) Known for her commitment to seasonality and her close relationships with regional suppliers, she would seem to have all the materials necessary to produce vegetarian masterpieces. On to the food...

Upscale Vegetarian: Stephan Pyles
Tuesday, August 28 @ 20:06:01 PDT by Scott
Vegetarian

I had some hope that Stephan Pyles would handle vegetarian requests ably. After all, Pyles is the author of a well-known book on Southwestern vegetarian cuisine (though the book was criticized by some for including pescetarian recipes). Though the restaurant performed well in some ways, my vegetarian experiences there have been, on the whole, uneven. On to the food...

Upscale Vegetarian: Aurora
Wednesday, August 22 @ 20:57:16 PDT by Scott
Vegetarian

I've generally enjoyed my meals at Aurora. Whatever gaps existed between Avner Samuel's style and my own preferences were narrowed by the fact that his kitchen almost always executed each dish extremely well. So it is with some regret that I write about my experience at Aurora as a vegetarian. On to the food...

Upscale Vegetarian

Vegetarian

Being a vegetarian in Dallas isn't easy. Growing conditions are harsh, often making local, seasonal produce harder to come by. Options are limited by a prevailing, meat-centric food culture that naturally evolved from this state's historic symbiosis with cattle. This has changed somewhat, as the influx of Indians to Dallas over the past couple of decades has provided some affordable vegetarian options. (Fry a playing card in ghee and it'll taste good.) But where's a vegetarian to go when he wants to celebrate a special occasion or see true culinary artistry? Onward....

Mexican on Jefferson: Las Ranitas
Tuesday, July 24 @ 23:33:08 PDT by Scott
Mexican

Las Ranitas sits across the street from the Oak Cliff Municipal Center on East Jefferson Boulevard. With steady business from city workers, police, and zoo employees, Las Ranitas is one of very few Mexican restaurants I've seen in Dallas that's frequented by a nearly equal mix of gringos and Mexican-Americans. Mexican on Jefferson: Paleteria La Mexicana

Paletas, for those who may not have encountered them (at least not under that name), are water- or milk/cream-based frozen desserts on sticks. Paleteria la Mexicana is one of the largest producers of paletas in Dallas. On to the food...

Mexican on Jefferson: Tienda OK
Monday, June 25 @ 23:43:24 PDT by Scott

Tienda OK is a small convenience store with a part time taqueria. Though technically not on Jefferson, it's visible from Jefferson, which is enough to divert me. On to the food...
